Get To Know Jeff

Republican Jeff Weinstein is an attorney and businessman, as well as a political newcomer who has never before held public office. He has, however, been a fixture in the Athens civic community for nearly thirty years.

A native of Fort Worth, Jeff grew up in his family’s hardware store where he quickly learned the value of a hard day’s work. He began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in Dallas County, and later worked as an insurance defense attorney before moving to Athens in 1990 and establishing his own small business and law firm. In addition to practicing law, Jeff obtained his Texas Real Estate Broker’s license in 2006 and opened Weinstein Real Estate.

Jeff has been extremely active in the Henderson County. Below are just a few of the things Jeff had dedicated himself to promoting throughout the community:

  • Created a local, online news outlet called Henderson County Now which acts as a community information forum that brings together residents to discuss issues of interest and maintains a calendar of events. This is the most read news outlet in the county.
  • Founded the Silver Screen Movie Club which provides movie entertainment for individuals over the age of 55. Each month, the SSMC is an opportunity for members of the community to get together to see a movie, enjoy coffee and donuts, visit with old friends and make new friends. The club is free to join. The only admission fee is a canned good or food item for the local food pantry.
  • Launched Henderson County Connect on Linked In with community partners. This initiative helps businesses in Henderson County grow, connect, increases job opportunities, and strengthens the economic stability of Henderson County.
  • Re-established the local Uncle Fletch Hamburger Festival, which celebrates Uncle Fletch Davis who invented the hamburger here in Athens in 1904. The festival has become a highly anticipated annual event in the community that brings together area residents and includes a dine-and-dash run, a hamburger eating contest, and a bobbing for burgers competition.
  • Created the Weinstein Law Scholarship Program in 2015 through Trinity Valley Community College. This scholarship program is awarded annually to ten Henderson County High School students and provides tuition and fees for 30 credit hours.
  • Defended religious freedom and stood against an out-of-state atheist group called the “Freedom from Religion Foundation” when they tried to remove the Christmas Nativity scene from the courthouse lawn.
  • Served as a board member for Mothers Against Drunk Driving East Texas (MADD).
  • Co-founded the organization “No to Distracted Driving” (NODD) in 2010 which offers free multimedia lectures to school, business and civic groups that help raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. The goal of this organization is help prevent accidents due to drivers who may be distracted by talking, texting, web-surfing or emailing when driving. For his efforts, the American Association of Justice named Jeff the “Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year.”

Jeff graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1983 with a degree in finance, and he earned his law degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1986. He is the proud father of three daughters and resides in Athens.
